Stan Collymore has urged Liverpool to sign Wolves playmaker Ruben Neves in the summer transfer window.

Neves, 22, has been superb at Molineux this season, helping Nuno Espirito Santo’s side achieve a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League by appearing 40 times across all competitions and scoring five goals.

Ex-Liverpool forward Collymore believes that the Portugal international is someone that Jurgen Klopp should be looking to sign in the summer in a bid to take his squad to the next level.

“If Jurgen Klopp’s men were to lose to Tottenham in the Champions League final, having been pipped by City in the Premier League, then it would be a massive hammer blow for them mentally and could have an impact on them going again next term,” Collymore told the Mirror.

“So the question Klopp will be asking himself now is, ‘What do we need to do to win the league?’

“He’ll know he needs a couple of marquee signings — Ruben Neves would be fantastic for Liverpool — and for his squad not to drop points in such games as the games against Manchester United and Everton.”

OPINION

Neves is a very good player but he is not the type of player that Liverpool need above all else at the moment. The former Porto star is very much a deep-lying midfielder who likes to sit back and watch the action unfold ahead of him. Liverpool already have a couple of players who can do that in Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita. What Liverpool really need is an attacking midfielder, similar to Philippe Coutinho. Neves is an amazing player and someone with a lot of potential but the £50,000-a-week [Spotrac] midfielder should not be a priority signing for Liverpool in the summer transfer window. Klopp should definitely have a go at signing Neves but only if he can afford him after filling the void that Coutinho created when he left Anfield for Barcelona in January last year. It’s going to be hard for Klopp to improve his squad in the summer but adding some extra quality to that midfield and maybe signing another centre-forward should be high on his to-do list.
