Chris Sutton has given Steven Gerrard a 10 out of 10 for his first season in charge of Rangers despite the lack of silverware.

Gerrard has done a solid job of improving the Gers to sealing a second-placed finish in the Scottish Premiership while also managing to win two Old Firm derbies.

On Sunday, Rangers earned their second victory of the season against Celtic by beating Sutton’s former club 2-0 at Ibrox and, seemingly sarcastically, the BT Sport pundit gave Gerrard top marks for his first campaign in management.

“They hammered them 2-0 in a meaningless game. But 10 out of 10. They’ve won no trophies but brilliant,” said Sutton, as shown on BT Sport Football’s official Twitter account on Sunday.

OPINION

Sutton is clearly on the wind up here because there’s no way he really thinks Gerrard is worthy of a 10 out of 10 rating – he would have at least had to win a piece of silverware or two for that and go unbeaten against Celtic. It has been a very good season for Gerrard though. He has made mistakes but this is a manager in what is essentially his rookie season. Gerrard has learned from his mistakes though and has ended the Scottish Premiership season on a real high with a great run of form that has sealed second place and culminated in a 2-0 win against Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday. As long as the Light Blues can keep together their key players in the summer, except for the liability that is Alfredo Morelos, then there’s no reason why the former Liverpool midfielder can lift some silverware with Rangers.
