COMMENTARY
West Brom might have lost 2-1 to Aston Villa in their Championship play-off semi final but it did not stop the fans raving over Dwight Gayle’s performance – even if the striker was sent off in the dying minutes. The Baggies star was fantastic and created plenty of openings for the visitors, not to mention kept the Villans under constant pressure from the front. He is the reason why they’re still in with a chance going into the second leg after he fired the ball past Villa goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. It came from a Glenn Whelan mistake but Gayle deserves full credit for the way he pounced on the ball, drove at the Villa defence and rifled one into the net to give his side a well deserved lead. It was Gayle’s 24th goal in what has been an incredible season for the striker – although it could well have come to a premature end. He will be missing for the second leg after his two yellow cards and judging by how impressed the fans were at Villa Park, he will be a sore absentee at the Hawthorns.
This is Futbol has picked out some of the best tweets about Gayle’s performance from that first half…
