COMMENTARY
Aston Villa knew that all they needed to do was to keep a clean sheet against West Brom and they would be on their way to Wembley for their second successive play-off final. With Tyrone Mings at the heart of their defence, the confidence of pulling such a feat off must have been high – although Craig Dawson put that hope to bed in the first half. The Bournemouth loanee has been one of the club’s outstanding talents during the second half of the season and it would not be much of a stretch to say his arrival has helped transform the defence under Dean Smith. The Villa faithful were left drooling over the powerhouse’s performance once again in the visit to the Hawthorns, even though he managed to find himself booked early on for a silly handball. He demonstrated his defensive nous with a great block after Jed Steer gave the ball away from a goal kick and after another performance which left them drooling you can tell the Villa faithful would love to see him spend longer than half a season in the West Midlands.
