Aston Villa midfielder Callum O’Hare is set to be in the running for a spot in the first team next season after penning a new deal with the club, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The newspaper claim on their website that with the 21-year-old impressing during his loan spell with Carlisle United in League Two, which led to his deal at Villa Park being extended, he is set to be given a shot in and around the senior side this summer and into next season.

O’Hare made just one appearance for Villa this season, an FA Cup outing of 55 minutes in the defeat to Swansea City back at the turn of 2019.

Opinion

O’Hare might be in the running for a first team opportunity at this present moment in time but if the club get promoted to the Premier League then everything is going to change. The quality needed in the top flight is head and shoulders above the Championship and trying to make that step up from playing League Two football this season is just going to end in tears for the promising midfield talent. The Villans obviously see something in him – after all, they extended his stay at the club – but he would definitely struggle to play much, if at all, among England’s elite. Maybe he is secretly hoping the club do not get promoted and that he is given a chance to strut his stuff among the senior side. It might be his only chance to forge a career at Villa. Just as the club’s future is up in the air ahead of the play-offs, so are the future of those on the fringes of the first team.
