Aston Villa assistant manager John Terry is one of the leading candidates to become the new Middlesbrough boss, according to talkSPORT.

Tony Pulis was sacked by Boro just five days ago and the search for a new boss has already begun.

Terry, who was appointed as assistant at Villa back in October, is discussing the possibility of taking over at the Riverside with Boro’s chiefs.

Villa have been a huge success with Terry’s help and have the chance to win promotion to the Premier League next Monday when they face Derby County in the play-off final.

 OPINION

Not many know the game better than John Terry. His knowledge and experience will be highly valued at Villa and they won’t want to lose him as their assistant manager. Terry is a role model professional and is a player that many look up to – losing him could seriously impact Villa’s morale. The opportunity to become Boro boss is tempting though and depending on what division Dean Smith’s men find themselves in next term, he may decide to jump ship. Having already reportedly held talks with the Boro chiefs, the club must be eager to explore the possibility of him taking over and this will concern Villa. The move for Terry will come as a surprise. However, with the likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard both having management jobs, it may be the right time for Terry to make the step-up to management and follow in both of their footsteps. He obviously believes it’s his time.
