West Ham have tabled a bid worth £8.8million for Olympiakos playmaker Kostas Fortounis, according to Radio Sport24.

The Greek broadcaster claims that Fortounis, 26, is in the final year of his contract with Olympiakos and there have been efforts to get him tied down to a new deal by the Greek giants.

It is understood that Burnley tried to sign the Greece international last summer when Olympiakos rejected a £6.2million offer by the Turf Moor club.

Good move for West Ham?

Fortounis has had a superb 2018/19 season with Olympiakos having been involved in 33 goals across all competitions.

In total, the attacking midfielder made 43 appearances for the Greek Super League runners-up, scoring 17 goals of his own and supplying 16 assists.

Clearly there is a major difference between Greece’s top-flight and the Premier League but Fortounis is a player with a lot of experience having played regularly in European football and previously in the Bundesliga for Kaiserslautern. He also has 41 caps for Greece and is Olympiakos’ captain.

West Ham could do with a player of Fortounis’ ilk and director of football Mario Husillos is bound to know the playmaker well as he has previously held a role at the Greek club.

Likely to happen?

Olympiakos will surely want more than £8.8million for their best player and their captain.

Although they failed to win the league this season, losing Fortounis would be a hammer blow to their chances next season and they will surely demand a lot more.
