Gary Lineker sent Aston Villa a message on Twitter after their win over Derby County on Monday in order to welcome them back to the Premier League.

The Match of the Day host congratulated the Villans on winning promotion by beating the Rams 2-1 in the Championship play-off final and claimed they should be in England’s top-flight.

Lineker then cheekily plugged his BBC show by adding that he would see the club on Match of the Day in August.

“Congratulations to @AVFCOfficial on winning promotion back to the Premier League. It’s where they should be. See you on @BBCMOTD in August,” wrote Lineker on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Aston Villa fans are likely in party-mode after watching their side beat Derby in order to reach the Premier League and Lineker’s tweet only makes the moment sweeter. The former Leicester City player says what most Aston Villa fans believe and that is that the Villans deserve to be in England’s top-flight. In fact many Villans fans no doubt still believe they should have beaten Fulham at Wembley last year in order to win promotion. With Dean Smith’s side back in England’s top-flight, it’ll be interesting to see what business the club does in the summer transfer market. While the Villans do have a talented squad, they have benefited from the loan system. The likes of Tyrone Mings and Tammy Abraham are set to go back to their parent clubs as it stands, unless the Villans agree a permanent deal for them. Hopefully the Villans acquire their impressive loan players for their sake, as arguably that is the reason why Fulham suffered relegation from the Premier League in their 2018/19 campaign.
