Pontus Jansson has sent an Instagram message to fans after the play-off heartbreak ended Leeds season last week.

In the message the defender said, “It shouldn’t end like that. Still don’t understand it today how it all could end so quickly.

“We gave all every single day and deserved more but sometimes you don’t get what you deserve.

“I’m proud of my club, teammates and fans that we never gave up. Thanks for all support and all the efforts during the year.”

Jansson sent the message to supporters on Monday afternoon, almost a week after losing 4-2 to Derby at Elland Road.

OPINION

Jansson is one of the players Leeds fans will be desperate to keep hold of over the summer. He didn’t play in the second leg of the play-off semi-final, with his replacement Gaetano Berardi picking up two yellow cards and the consequential red that let Derby in for the crucial fourth goal late on. Would that have happened with Jansson on the pitch? It’s obviously impossible to tell but it was a big decision from Bielsa to keep one of his best players – in fact the player he had said himself was the best for Leeds over the season – on the bench for the most important game of the season. Berardi’s second yellow was mindless, a rash challenge on the halfway line, and it ultimately cost Leeds so much. The message will resonate with Leeds fans – the play-offs mean the season ends so abruptly for the losers after nine months of intense competition. It’s almost hard to believe after all that that the season has come to an end. It’s go-again next season for Leeds in the Championship now, though, and fans will be hoping they will get to do that with Jansson and the other key Leeds players in place.
