Ian Harte has sent his congratulations to young Leeds United forward Niall Huggins, who has been handed his first international call up the Wales Under-21 squad.

Taking to his personal Twitter account on Friday Harte wrote “congratulations Niall,” after it was announced that Huggins will join up with Wales’ Under-21 squad for their forthcoming friendlies against Albania, according to Leeds’ official club website.

The call up comes after the 18-year-old enjoyed an impressive season with Leeds’ Under-18 side, having scored 12 goals in 29 games in the PDL-North League this term.

OPINION

Harte is right to congratulate Huggins, after he was rewarded for an impressive campaign in Leeds’ youth team by receiving a maiden call up to Wales’ Under-21 side. The young forward appears to have a bright future ahead of him at Elland Road, after impressing for the club’s Under-18 side and showing he has the potential to develop into a quality player in the coming years. Marcelo Bielsa has already shown that he is willing to give opportunities to young players this season, and if Huggins can continue to impress for Leeds’ youth teams he might be able to catch the Argentine’s eye and be given an opportunity in Leeds’ first team in the near future. For now though the 18-year-old will be focusing on ensuring he takes his form from this season into Wales’ Under-21  side, and showing the same sort of ability in the friendlies against Albania next month. Leeds will be hopeful that he is able to perform well on the international stage, and it should provide Huggins with renewed confidence ahead of next campaign.
