Leeds United defender Liam Cooper is set for a return to the Scottish national team setup, according to the Daily Record.

New manager Steve Clarke is understood to have held positive talks with the 27-year-old, who was deemed surplus to requirements by last boss Alex McLeish.

Cooper could be in line for a recall ahead of Scotland Euro 2020 qualifying double header with Cyprus and Belgium next month.

OPINION

This would be no more than Cooper deserves. The defender has been in fine form for Leeds this season, and it’s a little bit baffling that McLeish saw fit to give him the boot in the first place. Scottish football is hardly blessed with an embarrassment of riches at the moment, especially at the heart of defence, and given the performances he has put in for United this season, you would expect Cooper to waltz back into the international setup. It just goes to show that international football isn’t always necessarily a case of the cream of the crop turning out, and so often is as political and cliquey as the domestic game. Hopefully Cooper can put all of that behind him, however, and get his career up and running again with his country. He may have suffered disappoitnemtn at the last with Leeds in their hunt for Premier League football, but this would be a nice little boost for sure.
