Kris Boyd expects Rangers to sign Greg Stewart from Birmingham in the summer transfer window.

The Scottish Sun has recently reported that the Light Blues are in advanced talks to sign Stewart, 29, as his contract at St Andrew’s is due to expire at the end of the season.

The forward has spent the 2018/19 campaign on loan at both Kilmarnock and Aberdeen, experiencing different runs of form at each of the Scottish Premiership sides.

And although his time at current loan side Aberdeen has not been as impressive as his spell at Rugby Park, Boyd expects him to become a Rangers player in what is going to be a big summer at Ibrox.

“Recruitment is going to be huge over the summer for Rangers,” said Boyd on Sky Sports Main Event on Sunday after the win against Celtic [02:20pm]. “The quality in the squad needs to be added to.

“I think whatever happens to Ryan Kent over the summer will be huge for Rangers because we’ve seen over the course of the season, he has been one of the players along with Alfredo Morelos and Allan McGregor who has stood out. So if Rangers can him back…

“They’ve obviously brought in Jordan Jones, you would expect Greg Stewart to follow too, Hastie from Motherwell the young boy.

“But for me I think Rangers need to be signing three of four quality players that are going to come into that starting 11 and push the ones who are in the starting 11 right now onto the bench.”

OPINION

Stewart has not been in amazing form at Pittodrie after Derek McInnes signed him on loan in the second-half of the season. The 29-year-old was brilliant while at Kilmarnock up until the winter, scoring eight goals and supplying seven assists in 16 appearances across all competitions. However since moving to Aberdeen he’s scored just twice in 20 total appearances. Steve Clarke did use Stewart more in a centre-forward role that is natural to him whereas McInnes has played Stewart on the wings and in deeper roles as an attacking midfielder. However his form at Pittodrie just hasn’t been that great and it’s hard to see how Stewart is an improvement on what Steven Gerrard already has at his disposal in those positions. It’s not like Stewart adds anything that Rangers don’t have so it might be a good idea to pass on this one. Boyd wants Rangers to sign three or four “quality players”, but Stewart just doesn’t fit that category.
