Leicester centre-back Filip Benkovic has suggested that he could re-sign for Celtic in the summer transfer window after completing his season-long loan with the Parkhead club.

Benkovic, 21, made 27 appearances in all competitions while on loan with the Hoops as they won a third domestic treble in a row.

The Croatian colossus has now returned to Leicester, but has revealed that he might end up back at Celtic Park for a second stint this summer.

“We will have to wait and see what happens in the summer and what is the plan for me next season,” Benkovic said, as quoted by the Herald.

“We have spoken a little bit about what will happen but not too much as I was just concentrating on Celtic.

“I wouldn’t rule out coming back to Celtic and you never know where life will take you. I don’t know what will happen, but I really enjoyed my time at the club. I am so proud to have played for Celtic and I am so thankful for everything they did for me.”

OPINION

Benkovic really showcased his quality while on loan at Celtic but it remains to be seen what Brendan Rodgers’ plans are for the 21-year-old now that he has returned to Leicester. Benkovic cost the Foxes £13million [Leicester Mercury] when they snapped him up from Dinamo Zagreb last August so they will no doubt want to at least see what their money has got them or try to preserve his transfer value by sending him back out on loan to someone like Celtic. The towering 6ft 4 [transfermarkt] defender did show that he has great potential at Celtic Park but he also showed that he is not the most reliable when it comes to fitness. Since the winter break, Benkovic only played six times in the Scottish Premiership due to his injury issues and the improved form of Jozo Simunovic and Kristoffer Ajer. That being said, he will surely be welcomed back to Parkhead if the chance arises.
