Aston Villa returned to the Premier League after a three-year absence away from the top flight in the Championship. After losing in last years play-off final against Fulham, the Villans got their revenge beating Derby County in this years final on Monday afternoon. After a terrible start to the season, Steve Bruce was replaced by boyhood Villa fan Dean Smith who enjoyed a 10-game winning streak in his club’s charge to the play-offs which saw them qualify comfortably in the end, finishing in fifth place. In a season where defensively Villa struggled, the loan signing of Tyrone Mings from Bournemouth and recalling goalkeeper Jed Steer proved to be a masterstroke by Smith. Steer solved a headache in the keeper department after he became the fourth keeper used throughout the campaign. Mark Bunn, Orjan Nyland and Lovre Kalinic were all used with none of the three being able to cement a spot in the side due to constant mistakes as well as injury. Steer returned and started in the last 15 matches in the Championship, becoming a mainstay in his sides push for promotion. Writing on his personal Twitter account, Steer celebrated his teams success by writing: “We are Premier League!”. Villa fans reacted with great joy with one even saying: “What a player! Number 1 for the Premier League, 100%”.
