Apollon Limassol are in the hunt to sign Rangers centre-forward Kyle Lafferty, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that the Cypriot club has contacted the Northern Ireland international’s representatives and are “confident” that they can strike a deal this summer with their “aggressive approach”.

It is understood that Lafferty, 31, has been deemed surplus to requirements by Steven Gerrard after a disappointing first season back at Ibrox after he was re-signed from Hearts last summer.

Good move for Rangers?

Lafferty has been a bit of a waste of money this season, with the ex-Norwich striker scoring just six goals in 30 appearances across all competitions for the Light Blues.

Whenever Alfredo Morelos was suspended, the Northern Irishman failed to replace him adequately and Jermain Defoe’s arrival in January forced the former Hearts man down the pecking order.

It would be a good idea to cash in on Lafferty in the summer, even if it’s not for a very high transfer fee as at least Gerrard can get him off the wagebill then and focus spending that money on young, hungry players for the first team.

Likely to happen?

It remains to be seen if a club like Apollon can lure Lafferty to Cyprus.

He hasn’t shied away from playing for European clubs in his career having previously had spells at Palermo, Sion and Caykur Rizespor.

However the Cypriot top-flight is not as reputable as moving to Italy or Switzerland or Turkey.

Lafferty might not want this move, even though both of the clubs probably do.
