Arsene Wenger has claimed that he is scared for Liverpool ahead of their Premier League clash with Newcastle United.

The Reds have two games left, but currently sit a point behind Manchester City in the title race, and know that a win at St. James’ Park next weekend is vital to their hopes of lifting the trophy.

But Wenger believes that Rafa Benitez’s side could cause an upset on Saturday evening.

As quoted in the Chronicle (10.09), he said: “There is still hope but they go to Newcastle.

“Newcastle is not an easy place for Liverpool . They are safe and I am scared for Liverpool even with one game to go City could have already won the Championship.

“They will fight until the end. It looks like there is destiny that is against Liverpool.”

OPINION

Arsene Wenger knows more about Premier League football than the rest of us have forgotten, and if he says that Liverpool should be worried, then perhaps they should be worried. Rafa Benitez has overseen a quiet revolution in recent months at St. James’ Park, and this is a vastly more proficient Newcastle side than the one that took a 4-0 caning at Anfield on Boxing Day. In some respects that game was the fulcrum for the Magpies’ season. Sean Longstaff came into the side for the first time, and after that they seemed to pick themselves up, dust themselves down, and take the first tentative steps towards securing safety. All of that being said, Liverpool are in imperious form. They are a juggernaut at the moment, obsessed with a first league title in 29 years, and they will know that nothing but a win will do. Expect the Toon Army to put up a decent fight, but when all is said and done, the Reds should still have too much for their hosts.
