Rangers manager Steven Gerrard might be reluctant to admit it but there is almost certainly one name which is first on the team sheet at Ibrox every week – Allan McGregor.

There is simply not quality competition for the veteran shot stopper at the club, leaving him a free run at the starting XI all season and not doing anything to suggest that he is not the right man to be playing for the club.

Yes, Gerrard might have swapped Wes Foderingham in earlier in the season but that was not because he thought McGregor was a worse goalkeeper – after all, he took his place back and has kept it ever since.

As such, McGregor can expect to remain in the side for next season but that should not stop Gerrard from shaking things up below his number one.

Andy Firth was brought in over January but considering his age – the former Liverpool man just 22-years-old – and a lack of experience, having played senior football for non-league Barrow and Chester, he is not going to be threatening the Scottish international any time soon, and neither is youngster Robbie McCrorie.

With Football Insider claiming that Jak Alnwick is destined for the exit door this summer, Foderingham, who is now 28, should be looking to follow his teammate for pastures new, with Gerrard unlikely to halt him as he shakes things up between the sticks.

McGregor is not going to be around forever but Foderingham is not the man to be his long-term successor, and question marks remain over what Firth and McCrorie can offer.

Time to find some new shot stopping talent at Rangers – which means getting the current options off the books.
