Celtic are set to allow goalkeeper Dorus de Vries depart on a free transfer this summer despite having been reinstated into the first team squad in recent weeks, according to Football Insider.

The reputable news source claim that the 6’3″ (source: Transfermarkt) shot stopper has no future at Parkhead and will be allowed to leave when his contract runs out at the end of the season, even though Neil Lennon has brought him back into the first team set up for their last six games across both their league and Scottish cup fixtures.

De Vries has only made 15 appearances for the Hoops, his last outing coming in a Scottish Cup quarter final win over Morton back in March 2018.

Opinion

With Scott Bain and Craig Gordon still at Celtic Park it should come as no surprise to see the Dutchman readied for a summer exit – although the Hoops might well be looking for a new recruit to help boost the options between the sticks considering the injury problems suffered by the ageing Gordon. De Vries has not really done much to warrant any first team action, having been disappointing when given the chance to play, but his experience would no doubt have helped the development of younger shot stoppers coming through the youth system. With so little game time, it remains to be seen if anyone wants to take a risk on his signing this summer, and it might well be that the veteran will have to settle for another backup role wherever he moves to. Could this be the end of his career as a professional? If the right sort of challenge is not offered his way, then do not be surprised to see the 38-year-old hang up his boots.
