Davie Hay believes that Celtic midfielder James Forrest has been the club’s best player in the last 18 months, and firmly thinks that he deserves to win Player of the Year.
He was in awe of the goal that the 27-year-old scored in the 3-0 win over Aberdeen on Sunday, calling it a “thing of beauty”, and said that he is capable of netting magnificent strikes – even in the bigger games.
Hay added that he is astonished that the Hoops ace was behind the likes of Patrick Roberts in the pecking order for a starting XI spot at the beginning of last season.
“Is it just me or is James Forrest getting better? His goal against against Aberdeen was a thing of beauty. For me, he has been Celtic’s best player for the past 18 months. It’s between James and Callum McGregor for Player of the Year and I think James is just ahead,” the pundit said in his Evening Times column.
“It’s been said so often that not only does he score spectacular goals, he gets them in the big games. If you watch the best of James Forrest, it’s some highlight reel. He has scored in Champions League qualifiers, the winner on one occasion, against Rangers, semi-finals and in three League Cup finals, all of which Celtic have won.
“This is a serious footballer. And to think that at the start of last season he was behind Patrick Roberts in the pecking order.”
