There is no doubting that Wolverhampton Wanderers have been one of the best teams ever to be promoted from the second tier into the Premier League and their season could get even better before it comes to an end.

Sitting seventh in the table, behind the established top six of England’s elite, Wolves are battling it out to finish as the best of the rest and earn themselves a potential Europa League spot in doing so.

Not content with dazzling in the league, not including the disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Bunrley this weekend, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have also impressed in the FA Cup, finding themselves in the semi-finals against Watford, beating the likes of Manchester United on the way to the last four.

However, star defender Matt Doherty has demanded that his teammates are not distracted by the cup clash, with the threat of their league campaign falling to the wayside as a result.

He told the Express and Star: “We don’t want this season to peter out. We have to make sure that doesn’t happen. That’s why the United match means so much – we want to finish as high is the league as we can.

“I don’t see why we can’t get Europe both ways really. We want to finish strongly and we want to win the FA Cup. All our thought processes are going forward and trying to put this game behind us.

“We know the whole city is thinking of Wembley but that’s why we’re professionals, we put that to the back of our minds and concentrate on the next game.”

As Doherty says, everyone in the stands at Molineux is dreaming of that clash against the Hornets at Wembley and you can imagine there are plenty of individuals in the squad who have got one eye on making themselves a cup hero.

As such, the full back’s demands of focus could well fall on deaf ears but quite frankly the fans are unlikely to care – they can be more than satisfied with their league performances and their priority now lies on picking up some silverware.

If Wolves did not win another game but came home FA Cup champions, you cannot imagine there would be too many complaints.
