Tottenham attacker Vincent Janssen is an easy player to slam after the 1-0 loss against West Ham.

The forward may have only appeared in the match from the 77th minute onwards after replacing Danny Rose but given how little he features for Spurs under Mauricio Pochettino, it’s easy to jump on his back when things go against his side.

Janssen had a notable chance to score for Spurs against the Hammers on Saturday in order to save them from a loss, yet Terry Sheringham has surely shielded the forward from blame after not scoring in that moment.

The former Spurs forward shared that he thought it was a difficult chance, saying the only way to score from the position he was in would be to hit the ball towards the near post, and pointed out that at least Janssen worked the defenders in that moment.

“It’s a fantastic ball but it just keeps Janssen a little unaware but he’s outside the line of the goal so he’s done all he can,” said Sheringham on Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday (April 28th, 11:14am).

“It’s a tough one, he’s got a yard to put that ball in and his probably picked the wrong side back across, you’re saying put it into the other corner? (at Kamara) but I’d say the near post is the only way you’re gonna score that.

“Its’s a tough one but he has made the defenders work.”

When you consider that Sheringham and Chris Kamara both have different ideas on how Janssen could have scored, it shows it was a difficult chance to convert.

Sheringham was a prolific goalscorer during his career and if he believes a chance is hard, then it definitely is.

With that in mind surely the retired striker has protected Janssen from taking much criticism after Spurs’ surprise loss by explaining why the player’s chance wasn’t an easy one.
