Robbie Savage backed Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino to be crowned Manager of the Year but thought he only deserved that accolade if Spurs win the Champions League.

The outspoken pundit shared that while some would say Wolves manager Nuno Santo should be manager of the season, if Spurs won the Champions League then Pochettino should take the honour.

Savage claimed that his remarks on Pochettino had upset the ‘clowns’ on Twitter as he was now getting hammered and called a clown himself after gushing about the Spurs boss.

“All of these clowns hammering me on Twitter for saying that if Pochettino wins the Champions League with Spurs that for me, he should be manager of the season,” said Savage on BBC Radio 5 Live (19:50, Saturday April 27th).

“But some people say Nuno for Wolves as they look likely to finish seventh in the Premier League but Sean Dyche did that with Burnley last season and their wage bill was probably lower than Wolves, no one was saying Dyche should be manager of the season.

“But all I’m getting on Twitter is Robbie Savage is a clown for saying Pochettino should get it for winning the Champions League, he has spent almost no money and he’ll do without Kane and without Son in the first-leg.

“Yet this clowns are hammering me, who should be manager of the year?”

OPINION

You can’t say anything these days without getting torn apart on Twitter and Savage no doubt knows that more than most. The pundit has never been one to shy away from a controversial opinion and that should be commended. However backing Pochettino to win Manager of the Year shouldn’t be an opinion that gets torn apart. This is especially the case when Savage is only saying the manager deserves it if Spurs win the Champions League. Pochettino has worked wonders yet again at Tottenham on a limited budget and if he results in the Champions League trophy being racked up, then of course he should be praised for the job he has done. Savage is also right to question whether Santo deserves an award for his antics with Wolves this season. It’s true that their first season back in the Premier League has been a fantastic success, but it’s not like they weren’t helped by the cash being splashed.
