Martin Jol has urged Tottenham to sign Ajax wide man Hakim Ziyech.

The 26-year-old Moroccan has been in fine form for the Dutch giants so far this season, hitting 20 goals and 20 assists in all competitions, and Jol believes he would be a great addition for his former English side.

Speaking to the Guardian ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final between the two clubs, he said: “Hakim Ziyech is on the right wing but he is more like a midfield player. He drifts in, plays in spaces and he is a passer. If he has got the ball, the others will attack the spaces and run in behind.

“If I was Spurs, I would sign Ziyech. He is not the strongest but he is developing into a very good player.

“There is one thing. Look at Tadic. He was an average player in the Premier League but in the Netherlands, he is one of the best in the league. In the Netherlands, it’s not as difficult as people think.”

OPINION

Jol is right to suggest Ziyech would be a good signing for Spurs. Truth is he’d probably be a good signing for anybody. The wide man has been in breathtaking form for large parts of the season, and his stats don’t lie. There are few things as lethal in football as a wide man who can create and score, and Ziyech can do both in abundance. The 26-year-old likes to wander, likes to find space, and ultimately looks like the sort of player that Mauricio Pochettino would definitely fancy. You get the impression that this Ajax side, as good as it is, is going to be picked to the bone this summer, and if there is an exodus of talent after this superb European run, why shouldn’t Spurs get in on the act and make a move? They will get a uniquely intimate opportunity to scout Ziyech over the next couple of weeks, and here’s hoping he doesn’t break their hearts in that time. He is more than capable of doing so.
