Liam Rosenior heaped praise on Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks ahead of Spurs facing Manchester City on Wednesday night.

The Sky Sports pundit, regularly seen on shows such as The Debate, revealed he was hoping for Spurs’ sake that the 23-year-old would be fit enough to face Pep Guardiola’s side in the Champions League.

Rosenior shared that he thought Winks was one of those players who was like “gold dust” in away games due to him doing the “unglamorous things” to ensure his side won the midfield battle.

“You need midfielders especially against Man City to cover ground, turn the ball over, win the ball back and be dynamic in small areas and he (Winks) does that so well,” said Rosenior on Sky Sports’ The Debate (22:38, Sky Sports Premier League, Tuesday April 16th).

“We talk about Manchester United buying for those unglamorous positions, he does the unglamorous things so well, he reads the game so well, he breaks up play so well in midfield and keeps it simple.

“They are the players who are like gold dust in a game like this away from home and I hope for Tottenham’s sake he is fit, because he deserves to play in it.”

OPINION

Rosenior should be prepared for disappointment ahead of Mauricio Pochettino revealing his team for the clash with Man City, as Spurs’ official Twitter account confirmed Winks would miss the match due to a groin injury. The midfielder being unable to feature against Man City is a big blow and the pundit hits the nail on the head with his explanation of why the 23-year-old is such an important player. While Pochettino has many talented midfielders to call upon, there’s none who ensure the club win the midfield battle quite like Winks does. The Spurs midfielder has featured 40 times this season, which shows his importance, and supporters should just be hoping he isn’t set to miss many more games. Without Winks to call upon on Wednesday, other players will have to step up and cover the work load, if Spurs are going to have any chance of ruining Man City’s Champions League dreams.
