West Brom are set to appoint Steven Reid as first team coach, according to Telegraph reporter John Percy.

The reliable journalist claimed via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday that Reid, 38, will be hired to assist James Shan, who has been handed the manager’s job at The Hawthorns for the rest of the season.

It is understood that Reid is expected to be at West Brom’s training ground tomorrow (Thursday).

OPINION

Reid was a very popular player among the West Brom supporters during his spell as a player at The Hawthorns, and the former Ireland defender will be a welcome addition to Shan’s coaching staff. Shan has done a decent job as caretaker manager since Darren Moore was sacked, but he will need assistance when it comes to trying to win promotion to the Premier League. Reid has Reading, Crystal Palace and AFC Wimbledon as a coach since hanging up his boots, working with ex-Albion boss Roy Hodgson for a spell at Selhurst Park. West Brom fans will surely be praying that Hodgson’s managerial magic has rubbed off on Reid a bit, because if it has, he could be invaluable in the club’s bid to win promotion. West Brom’s only hope of earning promotion is surely by going up through the play-offs. It will be a tough ask for them to win against potential opponents like Aston Villa and Sheffield United, but if they can hit their best form in the coming weeks, fans will be a lot more confident about sealing a return to the top-flight.
