Teddy Sheringham has heaped praise on Salomon Rondon for his contribution to Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw with Brighton on Saturday.

The Magpies came away with a point from their long trek south thanks to a goal from Ayoze Perez, but it was the Venezuelan who provided the assist, and Sheringham was quick to highlight his impact.

Speaking on Goals on Sunday (April 28th, Sky Sports Premier League, 10.15am), he said: “Great centre forward play from Rondon, setting that ball up perfectly for his mate to come in and strike it.

“Didn’t have to break his stride.

“Brilliant.”

OPINION

Sheringham knows a thing or two about centre forward play, and if he his heaping praise on Rondon then you know that he must be having a decent impact. It’s no exaggeration to say that the Venezuelan has been an absolute revelation since signing for the Magpies, and without him, it’s hard to imagine them being anywhere near as safe as they are right now. His goalscoring is one thing, but his general play is another, and the way that he has turned provider for Perez in recent weeks has been next level. The big hope will be that they can keep him next season, but if they can’t then it will leave a huge void in the side that will take some filling. His future is certainly touch and go, the Toon Army will all be hoping and praying that he can be retained to keep Rafa’s quiet revolution going.
