Newcastle keen on Welbeck

Newcastle United are interested in signing Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck this summer, according to Football Insider.

The £125,000-a-week [Spotrac] striker is out of contract at Arsenal in the summer, and it is understood that the Gunners have no intention of offering him a new deal.

The report suggests that the Magpies will be tempted to make a move for the 28-year-old regardless of whether or not manager Rafa Benitez signs a new deal on Tyneside, but could face competition from Everton.

Good move for Newcastle?

This would be a big, big move for Newcastle, and one that you could definitely see working. Welbeck is quality, there is no doubting that, but he has had a terrible run of luck with injuries, and it’s no surprise that he has dropped down the pecking order at Arsenal given the wealth of attacking talent they have invested in over the past couple of seasons. What the England international needs is to go to a side where he will get a decent run in the team, and ultimately be regarded as top dog. Newcastle would give him that opportunity.

Likely to happen?

Even if they were to retain the services of Salomon Rondon, you could see a place for both players in Newcastle’s side, and if Mike Ashley is willing to meet his wage demands, the Magpies could pull off a real coup with his signature. There will be competition, of course, but there’s no reason why this couldn’t happen, and it would wonderful if it did.
