It would be fair to say that Manchester United fans have not really taken to Matteo Darmian during his time at Old Trafford but to be fair to the Italian international, neither have his managers at the club. He was rarely used by Jose Mourinho and that trend has continued into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign – but the supporters are asking why that has been the case after an impressive performance in the derby versus Manchester City on Wednesday night. There are few more dangerous attacks in the Premier League than Pep Guardiola’s but Darmian managed to shepherd the likes of Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva impressively in what many have called a “composed” performance from the 29-year-old. He might not be the most technically gifted of footballers but he is definitely willing to give 100 per cent and that has earned him some rare plaudits from the stands in Salford. Whether he is given the chance to continue in the starting XI moving forward remains to be seen, but he has some new fans judging by the reaction on Twitter.
