COMMENTARY
Liverpool may have gone into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead over Porto on Wednesday, but many Reds fans were still left fuming on social media after witnessing the first half. This was because lots of them were very unimpressed by defender Joel Matip’s display. The 27-year-old centre-back looked nervy from the get go and it was no surprise that he then proceeded to struggle during the match. One Reds fan described Matip’s positioning as horrendous and it was easy to see why. The centre-back was constantly caught out of position and for some reason left a huge gap between him and Virgil van Dijk, which Porto attempted to exploit time and time again. While Porto’s efforts didn’t lead to them getting a vital goal in the first-half, it wasn’t due to Matip doing his defensive duties well. The 27-year-old has shown in recent weeks that he can be a reliable defender for Jurgen Klopp’s side and hopefully he gets back to his best sooner rather than later.
