Arsenal fans react to Mustafi v Leicester

Shkodran Mustafi isn’t exactly popular at the Emirates at the moment. His horror show outing against Wolves in midweek did little to endear himself to an Arsenal fanbase that is growing increasingly frustrated with his calamitous tendencies. He didn’t exactly help his ailing reputation in the first half against Leicester City on Sunday afternoon either. The German’s showing was littered with nervy interventions and panicky clearances, and it honestly felt as if he was an accident waiting to happen. Arsenal have had some fairly dreadful defenders down the years, but it’s hard to remember one enduring as poor a patch Mustafi is at the moment. Every game he pulls on the shirt he looks worse than he did last time, and it’s a worrying spiral that will have many fans praying that they find a replacement over the summer. It’s hard to see how this side can become a serious title contender with a player of his quality marshalling the defence, and Unai Emery must be desperately aware of this. To be fair to the boss, his hand has been forced somewhat by injuries this term, but even then, Mustafi’s continued inclusion suggests that more strength in depth is needed.
