Costa Rican club Deportiva Alajuelense has tabled an offer for Celtic right-back Cristian Gamboa, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that the 29-year-old’s deal at Parkhead will expire at the end of the season but the Hoops will not be offering him fresh terms and they are prepared to let him leave.

It is understood that Deportiva Alajuelense once rejected Gamboa after he had a trial for them but he has since made 73 appearances for the Costa Rican national team and played at two World Cups.

Good move for Celtic?

Celtic may as well get rid of Gamboa because he has been nothing but a fringe player ever since he joined the Scottish giants from West Brom back in 2016.

The 29-year-old has an abundance of pace but offers very little when it comes to defending and his overall technical abilities are not short of what is required by players at Celtic Park.

The Hoops should be happy to see Gamboa offer their wagebill because he has only made 31 appearances across all competitions for them in three seasons.

Hopefully he accepts the offer by Deportiva Alajuelense.

Likely to happen?

It might depend on whether Gamboa wants to return to Deportiva Alajuelense, because they are a team that have rejected him in the past.

The former West Brom right-back may also want to stay put in Europe because he might have a better chance of playing in the Costa Rica national team if he represents a team with a better reputation.

Gamboa should not be short of offers once his deal ends at Celtic, so he shouldn’t just accept the first one that comes his way.
