Ajax A1 assistant manager Ronald de Boer has said that Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt can choose which team he plays for in the world.

De Boer went on to say that he thinks the player is worth more than £75million and that he would advise him to go to Man City, Liverpool or Tottenham if he was to go to the Premier League.

Talking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show de Boer said, “For me… 19-year-old boy, captain of Ajax, he is the guy who is next to van Dijk in the national team.

“For me he can go and play in any team… He can easily come to the Premier League, he can choose from any team in the world. De Jong went for £75m but in my opinion Matthijs de Ligt is further in his quality and should be more.

“It’s up to him, what he wants to do… For me Barcelona, City, Liverpool, PSG, I would give him advice to go there, even Tottenham, great teams to play for.”

OPINION

Tottenham fans will be absolutely thrilled that their side is getting mentioned in the same breath as clubs like Barcelona, Liverpool and Man City. It shows just how far they’ve come under Mauricio Pochettino in the past few years. Matthijs de Ligt is an incredible talent and could go for nearer £100million when he chooses to leave Ajax. It would be a huge coup for Tottenham to land him, but Liverpool, with national teammate Virgil van Dijk already playing for them, must be tempting. That would be a frightening combination for other Premier League sides. Never mind signing him, though, Tottenham’s first task has to be to work out how to get past him tonight in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He’s been in sensational form recently and will be looking to further his name on the world stage tonight. Could he end up at Tottenham? You never know, but you’d have to think they wouldn’t be the first name on his list.
