Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has backed John Terry to have a big future as a manager, citing the ex-Chelsea man’s attention to detail as a key factor.

Having retired from the game at the end of last season, Terry has taken on a coaching role at Villa Park, and Smith believes he can go to the top as a manager himself.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: “He wanted to come in and learn about being a coach and a manager.

“I have no doubts that he’s going to make a top manager.

“The amount of detail he goes into with the players is phenomenal.”

OPINION

Terry certainly comes from the right pedigree to be a top coach, and he appears to have thrown himself into his coaching at role wholeheartedly. The former England captain was always exemplary on the pitch, and there are few ex-players as well-qualified to give advice as he is. Terry won it all as a player, and you can tell that he is absolutely committed to ensuring that that same hunger for success and attention to detail is replicated now that he has hung his boots up. There will have been a fair few people who may have been sceptical about his appointment at Villa Park, that it may have been a case of jobs for the boys, but his, and Villa’s, performances should certainly have put any suspicion of that to bed. He won’t be at Villa for too long before he is given the top job somewhere else, but at this rate, he will have absolutely earned it.
