Paul McGrath reckons that Aston Villa have “won the right” to be in the Championship play-offs after a vital 2-0 win over Bolton on Friday.

Goals from Jack Grealish and Tammy Abraham ensured Villa of fifth spot as it stands, however, the result means that Bolton have now been relegated to League One alongside Ipswich.

McGrath took to his personal Twitter account after the game to heap praise on his former side, as the victory meant that Villa had earned 27 points in a row.

“27 points in a row, what a team this is. Aston Villa have won the right to be in the play offs. We now own the motivation, let’s use it. Dean Smith is showing us the way, I hope everyone on the panel are following,” he said.

OPINION

Villa are in great form at the moment, although there were some points within the match that made you think whether they were going to get the three points. However, their quality soon shone through, and it was up to the team’s two best players to deliver the goods once again. McGrath is right to heap praise on his old side in the way that he has, and the manner in which he has praised Dean Smith shows just what a fine job he is doing for the club at the moment. Just where would they be if they had stuck with Steve Bruce all of those months ago? Either way, they are really the team to watch right now, and if anyone is going to show everyone else how the play-offs should be approached, then it should be Villa. If Grealish and Abraham are at the top of their game, then they are really going to take some stopping.
