Bielsa could quit

Marcelo Bielsa will consider quitting Leeds United if his side fail to get promoted this season, according to the Mirror.

After holding a commanding position going into Easter weekend, the Yorkshire giants lost two games on the bounce to squander their chances of automatic promotion, allowing Sheffield United to leapfrog them and join Norwich City as the second side to go up yesterday.

That leaves Leeds in the play-offs, and it is understood that should they fail to find a way out of the Championship after a stellar campaign, the Argentine could walk away from the club, deeming his efforts as a failure.

The report suggests it would then fall to owner Andrea Radrizzani to persuade him to stay.

OPINION

This would be an absolute disaster for United. Whether they go up or not, Bielsa has transformed that Leeds side from also-rans into serious promotions contenders, and that is no mean feat. For a while this season, this looked like one of the best Championship sides we have ever seen. While that may not have lasted throughout the season, and while it has been the unexpected dips in form that have ultimately cost Leeds the most, they are still a formidable outfit, and you would be hard pushed to find a single United fan who wanted Bielsa to go. They love him in the city – his quiet, slightly odd, charisma – and supporters will know that it will be a long time before they find a manager as good as him. Of course, they might still go up via the play-offs, but if they don’t, Radrizzani could face a huge task when it comes to persuading him to stay.
