Harry Redknapp has said that he thinks Mauricio Pochettino’s team was better two years ago than it is now.

He was quoted by the Evening Standard from the BBC 5 Live’s Sportsweek show and said “I honestly think Tottenham were better two years ago when Kyle Walker was playing right-back and absolutely on fire, Danny Rose was in his pomp absolutely flying and Dembele was top drawer.”

His comments were made after Tottenham struggled to a 1-1 draw with north London rivals Arsenal, after losing the two previous games.

Redknapp’s quote was posted online by a Tottenham fan page and it garnered an interesting reaction from one of the players that featured in that Spurs side. Ricky Sacks revealed on his Twitter page that Victor Wanyama had “‘liked’ this statement on his official Instagram account.”

OPINION

Wanyama was one of the players who struggled on Saturday but he was at his peak for Tottenham alongside Mousa Dembele a couple of years ago. We actually think that most fans would probably agree with Harry Redknapp here if they were being honest. Man City have a policy of not selling to Premier League rivals and Daniel Levy definitely strengthened Guardiola’s side when Walker was sold. However, despite not spending in the last two windows Pochettino maintained a challenge in the Premier League and should still finish in the top four. That’s some achievement but if they want to move up to the next level – the nose-bleed heights occupied by Liverpool and Man City – they have to bring some new players in. Redknapp says they need two or three big players in the summer and it will be interesting to see if Levy’s ambitions match those of Pochettino. As for Wanyama liking the quote from Redknapp, it’s perhaps not the most sensible thing he’ll do on social media this year, but it’s something most fans will probably sympathise with.
