Leeds stormed back to the top of the Championship with a commanding performance against Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday night.

Leeds were 3-0 up by half-time and it stayed that way until the end – and there was one man at the centre of it all for the visitors, Pablo Hernandez.

He’s had an unbelievable season for Leeds – his best in a white shirt – and he scored two fantastic goals in the first 45 minutes that had Sky Sports pundit Tony Gale purring.

Talking on the live coverage of the game (Sky Sports Action, Tuesday, 8pm) Gale said, “This Hernandez, he’s got a great technique. Two very different goals. One on the near post and he means every bit of it.

“His second was at the far post. He’s a superb player. If you sit off players with quality like Hernandez you’ll get picked off. It’s a simply beautiful technique, so much power and timing.”

OPINION

After a few disappointing results since Christmas, including a 1-0 defeat to QPR, Leeds have picked up their form just at the right time. Leeds have now won three in a row and five of their last six, and they stormed back to the top of the table tonight. That could change tomorrow, with Norwich playing on Wednesday, but all Leeds can do is keep winning. And if they do that, they’ll be playing in the Premier League next season. Their next game is huge, against third-placed Sheffield United on Saturday. A win there would be the biggest indicator yet that Leeds are going to hold onto a top-two spot this season. And, if they play like they did tonight, Sheffield United won’t be able to do anything about them. The only blip on the night was the fact that Sheffield United also won, despite being down to 10 men against Brentford, but everything is still in Leeds’ hands. And you can’t ask for more than that at this time of the season.
