Ryan Taylor has wished Sean Longstaff a “speedy recovery” after Newcastle United confirmed that the midfielder could miss the rest of the season with a knee ligament injury.

Longstaff, 21, has been superb in a breakthrough season at St James’ Park, but it seems as though his campaign could be coming to an abrupt end after it was announced on Newcastle’s official website that the midfielder’s injury in the defeat at West Ham is going to keep him on the sidelines for quite some time.

It is a major blow for the Magpies as Longstaff has been in top form for them lately, and ex-Toon star Taylor has sent a message to the 21-year-old on Twitter.

“Gutted to hear about your injury,” he said, via his personal Twitter account on Thursday. “You’ve been fantastic, speedy recovery.”

OPINION

Taylor is right, Longstaff has been fantastic for Newcastle in the last few months and him being sidelined for the rest of the season is terrible news for Rafa Benitez, who has started to rely on the midfielder. The former Blackpool and Kilmarnock loanee is the first Newcastle academy product to get a foothold in the first team at St James’ Park for quite a long time. Newcastle fans love it when they see the club produce high quality youngsters and they love it even more when they are from the local area and play very well in the senior squad. Longstaff has made nine Premier League appearances for Newcastle since his league debut in December, and has played well in pretty much all of them. For him to be injured when he is riding the crest of a wave like this is a blow for him, and hopefully he can bounce back from it for the start of the 2019/20 campaign.
