Tottenham academy coach Matt Wells has quit the club to join Fulham, it has been confirmed.

Spurs announced on their official website that Wells has left his role as Under-18s manager to join the first-team coaching staff set up by caretaker Fulham manager Scott Parker.

Former Tottenham midfielder Wells served as assistant coach to the late Ugo Ehiogu and Scott Parker with the Under-23s and Under-18s, before taking over responsibilities for the Under-18s last summer.

OPINION

It’s unusual for Spurs to go to such lengths to wave goodbye to an age-group coach. Perhaps it is a reflection of the esteem in which ex-midfielder Wells, who came through the north Londoners’ academy himself during his own playing days, is held by the club. Certainly, Parker, who quit his own Under-23s job at Tottenham last summer, to join Fulham as he moved up the coaching ladder, is a big fan of Wells. He revealed at his media conference on Thursday, as quoted by the Evening Standard, that Well is a “fantastic” coach who is a “massive addition to Fulham”. Youthful coaching pairing Wells and Parker, who are both in their 30s, are joined by the more experienced Stuart Gray in an overhaul of the coaching staff following the dismissal of Claudio Ranieri last week. Parker is only in interim charge, so Wells is taking a risk quitting a more stable post at a bigger club. But the chance to be reunited with Parker and work with first-team players is one that he has deemed too good to turn down.
