BBC pundit Alan Shearer has put West Ham United striker Javier Hernandez in his Premier League team of the week.

Hernandez was on target twice on Saturday, scoring the winner in stoppage time for the Hammers as they beat Huddersfield in seven goal thriller, overturning a 2-1 deficit in order to win 4-3.

Shearer was full of praise for the Mexican international, remarking on how dangerous he is in the box as he scored his 52nd Premier League goal at the weekend.

Shearer’s team of the week was posted by the Premier League on their website and on Twitter on Monday afternoon.

“The ultimate penalty area poacher who turned the game around for West Ham. Fifty-two goals in the Premier League, all inside the box. You cannot afford to give him a chance,” he said.

OPINION

Shearer is absolutely right here – you just cannot afford to give a striker like Hernandez room in the box to shoot, otherwise he will just punish you. He demonstrated exactly this as he scored two goals against the Terriers on Saturday, and he showed the type of form that saw him rip defences apart during his time at Manchester United. Boss Manuel Pellegrini must be gleaming from ear to ear after this performance from the forward, as he has not exactly had the best of seasons with the Irons. At the beginning, he was ousted from the team, with Marko Arnautovic the seemingly preferred choice. However, he has gone on and proved that he is the player who is capable of leading the line. If he plays anything like he did on Saturday between now and the end of the season, then the chances of him leaving in the summer are not likely.
