David Weir has suggested that Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor sees every clash with a striker “as a bit of a war”, and has praised the stopper as “life-changing”.

The veteran keeper has been a key figure for the Gers this season, and has four clean sheets out of his last five appearances.

As quoted in the Daily Record, former Rangers man Weir was eager to hail the 37-year-old.

He said: “Allan sees it as a bit of a war. It’s very personal for him against strikers. Even in training, he was the same.

“He didn’t like anybody scoring against him, regardless of who it was. Allan took it personally – and you can still see that now. It means so much to him. There’s an aggression in him.

“That’s just his character. He enjoys  playing right on the edge and the personal nature of his challenge with strikers.

“Some of Allan’s saves in really important games have been life-changing, in terms of the results.”

OPINION

They say you have to be mad to be a goalkeeper, and clearly McGregor is just the right amount of unhinged. To be a stopper you have to have an unerring mental strength and a conviction that you are worthy, and capable of being the very last line of defence. Clearly, McGregor has both of those of qualities in abundance, and amongst a squad of bright sparks this season, he has been exemplary. At 37, he has plenty of experience, and you can see that shine through regularly in the way that he marshals those in front of him and approaches each game with the kind of fearlessness that can only come with the assurance of having done a job for years. How much longer he can go on for remains to be seen, but you would have to say that when the day does eventually come for McGregor to hang up his gloves, the Gers will struggle to replace him.
