Steven Gerrard has admitted that he regrets not signing a playmaker in the January transfer window, but has hinted that Rangers are close to rectifying that problem.

The Gers manager has been quick to admit that he made a mistake by not bringing in a creative talent at the beginning of the year, but also delivered a cryptic update on his plans for the future.

As quoted in the Scottish Sun, he said: “I’d probably be better than Pep Guardiola if I made 20 changes in the summer and got 20 perfectly right!

“The reality is, in the market we are in, you’re going to make a few mistakes or get some wrong, but it was needed, in my opinion, and now it’s more about trying to identify people who are going to make a difference in the 11 rather than trying to make the squad stronger.

“A number 10 was an area we tried but maybe targets you’re after aren’t available or with the funds available you can’t make that happen.

“But it’s definitely an area we’re looking at and I predict that could change in the short-term. Short-term, for me, is the next window.”

OPINION

It’s nice to hear a manager being so frank, and Rangers fans will be licking their lips over the prospect of Gerrard making behind the scenes moves to improve his squad. The fact that he is aiming for first team talent is also a highly promising sign, and would suggest not only that he feels he has built a decent enough foundation to improve upon, but also that he sees himself in the job for the long term. Realistically, the size of the task he was faced with meant that he was always going to struggle to lift a trophy this season, and perhaps the flying start he got off to might have lulled a few fans into believing that the side were further ahead of where they actually were. A series of disappointing results littered throughout the campaign has brought things back down to earth with a bit of a bump, but looking to the future, there are plenty if reasons to be very excited.
