Barry Ferguson believes that Rangers loanee Ryan Kent should stay the club beyond the end of his current spell, and thinks that signing him for £3 million to £4 million would be “smart business”.

He says that the 22-year-old ace has proved that he is worthy of wearing the Rangers shirt after the way has performed this season, and has listed him as one of the players who should stay at Ibrox alongside Steven Davis.

Ferguson adds that it is wise to sign a player like Kent, as Steven Gerrard is already aware of the quality that he can bring to the team.

“You had Steve Davis and Jermain Defoe brought in as big hitters in January and neither of them have lived up to the billing. But I think both of them will look like different players after a full pre-season in Glasgow and I fully expect them to become a major part of the next big step under Gerrard,” he said in his Daily Record column.

“Ryan Kent is another who should stay. If Gerrard can get him for anywhere between three or four million pounds as has been quoted then that looks like smart business to me. That kid has proved that he belongs in a Rangers shirt so Gerrard would be buying the tried and tested.”

OPINION

Ryan Kent has been quite the player for Rangers this season, and it would be surprising if they did not want to sign him beyond the end of his loan spell. He operates as a winger and he has scored five goals this season, which is a figure that does not do his contribution much justice. Kent brings the energy to every game he plays, and there is hardly a game that goes by where he does not give 100 per cent. Like Ferguson pointed out, getting around £3 million to £4 million for him would be “smart business”, and this could end up being one of their most important signings. Many of the fans no doubt want Kent to stay permanently, and Gerrard must make that an utmost priority when the window opens. Davis on the other hand, has had a rather disappointing return to Ibrox, and it remains to be seen whether he will stay beyond his current spell.
