Hay: Gordon is better than Bain

Davie Hay reckons that Craig Gordon is the better of the two goalkeepers at Celtic but was equally full of praise for teammate Scott Bain.

Bain, 27, has established himself as the Hoops’ and Scotland’s number one keeper, something which Hay labels as a “remarkable turnaround”, whilst also saying that he has given a “convincing account of his credentials” ever since the star made his debut.

However, he adds that he struggles to see where Bain’s excellent form leaves Gordon in terms of game time at Parkhead.

“In the space of just over a year Scott Bain has gone from being out in the cold at Dundee to being the number one for Celtic and Scotland. It is quite a remarkable turn around,” he said in his Evening Times column.

“I actually still think that Craig Gordon is the better of the two goalkeepers. I don’t say that as a criticism of Bain in any way, it is just a personal preference. But even for the likes of myself, I would say that Bain has offered a pretty convincing account of his credentials.

“The other thing is that he hasn’t really put a foot wrong since coming into the team at the turn of the year. You just can’t really see beyond the fact that right now he looks to have established himself as the first choice keeper at the club. Where that leaves Gordon remains to be seen.”

OPINION

There is absolutely no denying that Scott Bain has been remarkable ever since he came into the fold on a regular basis. He has been excellent for Celtic, so it is no surprise that he is currently their number one. However, you cannot help but feel sorry for Gordon amongst all of this. He has gone from being the main man between the sticks to being left out in the cold, and this must be disheartening for him personally. Hay says he prefers Gordon and there is nothing wrong in saying that – after all, Gordon is a decent shot stopper as well. You cannot help but fear for his future on Parkhead though, as Bain’s form suggests that he is not going to be usurped any time soon. Gordon’s lack of minutes recently is no doubt going to affect him and it would not be surprising if he started to consider his options.
