BBC Sport Scotland’s Rob MacLean hailed “incredible” Rangers winger Daniel Candeias after his latest weekend masterclass.

The broadcaster and journalist drooled over the Portugese for his “brilliantly” taken goal in the Light Blues’ 1-1 draw against Hibernian last Friday and how he has been such a consistent performer for the side.

“I probably should have picked Rangers right winger Daniel Candeias in my weekend selection more than I have done, so he’s getting the nod this time ahead of Motherwell’s Jake Hastie,” said MacLean in his BBC Sport team of the week column. “Candeias took his goal against Hibs brilliantly and, week in, week out, puts in an incredible shift.”

OPINION

Candeias is the unsung hero of Ibrox. He garners nothing like the attention or coverage of Alfredo Morelos, but his consistency, reliability and quality deserves more focus. The 31-year-old was one of the few successful imports with the Pedro Caixinha seal of approval after arriving in the summer of 2017, and has nailed down a regular starting spot on the right flank. He doesn’t score as many goals as he should – six from 45 appearances this season – with the strike against Hibs his first since December, but he provides a regular supply line and links the attacks together so well. A haul of 10 assists this season is impressive, as is the clearly excellent rapport he has with Morelos. Candeias is never going to be tabloid back page fodder, but he is an integral player under Steven Gerrard, and one who will need to fire if the team are to beat Aberdeen and reach the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup.
