Former Celtic man Alan Stubbs has suggested that Brendan Rodgers will come to regret leaving Celtic while casting serious doubts about what was happening behind the scenes at Parkhead.

The manager chose to take the vacant position at Leicester City earlier this week, but Stubbs believes that he could look back on the move with regret, although admitted that his departure could have been brewing for quite some time.

As quoted in the Scottish Sun, he said: “Over time, Brendan will regret leaving when he did. Right now, Brendan will have his reasons for it, but the majority of people on the outside will think he’s made the wrong decision.

“We don’t know the main reasons for Brendan leaving. Has there been a breakdown in relations with Peter Lawwell? There have been rumblings of discontent. Has it got to the point where Brendan’s said, ‘Enough is enough’? We don’t know.

“Brendan has come out and said how much he loved the club and the fans and the players, but something changed. Personally, I don’t think this has happened in the last couple of days. I think it’s been going on for a bit.”

OPINION
The timing of Rodgers’ departure certainly raised a few eyebrows, and the fact that he walked away from a historic treble treble is difficult to compute for many supporters. That being said, the impression you get is that it was a case of now or never when it came to the Leicester City job, and realistically, the boss had probably taken the Hoops as far as he could. He might come to regret leaving Parkhead, but if he makes a go of things south of the border, as he will believe he can, then those feelings of regret will fade pretty quickly. At the moment, most people associated with Celtic are viewing things from a pretty narrow perspective. The sad reality is that, for all they are a bigger club than the Foxes, the Bhoys play in such a small pond that there are always going to be limitations to the distance that an ambitious manager can take a side like Celtic. You get the feeling that this has been coming for a while.
