Celtic interim boss Neil Lennon has identified Chelsea defender Tomas Kalas as a transfer target, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper reports on their website that both Rangers and the Hoops have watched the £5million-rated 25-year-old – who is currently on loan at Bristol City – in action in the last couple of weeks, with Lennon putting the Czech centre-back high on his list of targets.

The report adds that Chelsea may be willing to loan the 6ft [Transfermarkt] enforcer out once again, but the Hoops could convince them to turn it into a permanent deal.

Good move for Celtic?

Kalas is in good form currently during his latest loan spell in the Championship, so it is wise for Celtic to be in pursuit of him. They need a centre-back in the summer, especially with Filip Benkovic returning to Leicester and Dedryck Boyata’s contract being up. Kalas is a sensible option and he has the experience to do well at a club like the Hoops, and pushing for a permanent deal may be the best bit of business Celtic do in the summer.

Likely to happen?

Kalas may be Chelsea’s longest serving player, but they have no need to keep him at the club, shown by the fact they keep loaning him out. This means that a deal seems likely for him, but they will have to fight off competition from bitter rivals Rangers first. However, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea would be keen to offload him permanently as they have already avoided doing so for one reason or another. Whether it be on loan or not though, Celtic are in a good position to sign him.
