Michael Appleton has emerged as a potential candidate for the West Brom job after Darren Moore was sacked on Saturday, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper claims that Albion chief executive Jenkins is an admirer of the 43-year-old, who has played for the Black Country club and was briefly caretaker manager after Roberto Di Matteo was sacked in 2011.

It is understood that the board could support a move to re-hire Appleton, whose most recently role was assistant manager of Leicester City.

He has also held roles as manager of Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn and Oxford United.

Good move for West Brom?

Appleton would be no better than Moore.

He knows the club well having played for, coached and managed them temporarily, but has never held a permanent role at a team as high up in the Football League pyramid as the Baggies.

West Brom are better off going after someone with a more proven track record, because the timing of their decision to sack Moore has left them with a huge decision in the coming days.

Likely to happen?

Jenkins is said to be a fan of Appleton and as every West Brom fan will say, Jenkins likes to be surrounded by people he knows.

However he has to justify his decision to sack Moore by hiring someone with a proven CV, someone who can win the play-offs.

Appleton is unlikely to do that, which is why it’s unlikely that Albion will look to re-hire their former first-team coach.
