Chris Kamara shared he was surprised just like everybody else that Brendan Rodgers opted to leave Celtic to become the manager of Leicester City.

The Sky Sports presenter revealed that from an outsider’s point of view you felt Rodgers would have wrapped up the treble-treble and told the Foxes he’d join them at the end of the season.

However Kamara noted that it wasn’t clear what have been going on behind-the-scenes at Celtic and that he knew prior to the season starting that Rodgers wanted to make a real attempt to succeed in Europe.

“Of course, I think everybody was surprised as the treble treble up in Scotland from an outsider’s point of view, you look at it and say tell Leicester I’ll come and join you at the end of the season, let me finish what I need to do up at Celtic,” said Kamara on Sky Sports News while previewing Goals on Sunday (March 3rd, 8:37am).

“There’s no rush as far as you’re concerned, that’s easy for the outsiders.

“But we don’t know the internal stuff, we don’t know what’s been going on with Brendan, the board or chief executive y’know.

“Whether his ambition outweighed their ambition, I know he wanted to make a real fist of Europe this time around but he had to sell, he didn’t have to sell, but he sold his best player to a team in France.

“So yeah it’s easy from the outside to say what we can see and how it looks, it might be totally different from Brendan’s point of view.”

OPINION

Kamara seems to think that Celtic possibly weren’t able to match Rodgers’ ambitions and the sale of Moussa Dembele in the summer was a factor in the manager deciding to leave. While the Hoops didn’t exactly do the business they needed to in either of the last two transfer windows and that likely left Rodgers frustrated, him exiting when he did still leaves a bitter taste. For the manager to up sticks at an important time in the season to take over a side that have nothing to play for, borders on disrespectful. The Foxes likely would have been willing to wait for Rodgers if they really wanted him and it just seems like he should have seen this season out. The Hoops could win the treble-treble this season and that honour is one worth sticking around for. For Rodgers to leave when he did, you have to think his relationship with the board had reached an unbearable stage for both parties.
