Celtic defender Marvin Compper is free to find a new club this summer even though he will still have a year left on his contract, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claim the one-time Germany international, 33, will be given the green light to move following a wretched time in the east end of Glasgow.

Compper has made just one appearance for Celtic since signing from RB Leipzig on New Year’s Day of last year.

OPINION

What a disappointment Compper has been at Celtic. He is so far down the pecking order – the German has not been named in single matchday squad all season – his name is not even mentioned in dispatches as a contender for a place in the side. For a player with 195 Bundesliga appearances under his belt and a CV that includes four elite European clubs in Leipzig, Hoffenheim, Borussia Mochengladbach and Fiorentina, it has been an immensely underwhelming spell. Celtic had high hopes when Compper was signed, expecting him to provide a wise head in a central defence that has creaked plenty of times under pressure in the last two seasons. Whether it’s down to fitness, conditioning, playing style or attitude, Compper’s failure speaks volumes for Lee Congerton’s spell as head of recruitment. It’s unlikely the player will be on a meagre salary, either. Poor effort all round.
